Then there’s the risk of infection: salons are places that you’re at risk of picking up fungus and bacteria.

If you’d like to treat your feet in between salon visits, here are some tips for doing your own pedicure at home.

Clean Your Feet
Cleaning your feet is the first step to help give yourself a pedicure. Give your feet a quick clean before getting started.

Soak
Soaking your toes and feet is an important step, and the best way to safely get the dead skin off your feet. Soak them for 10 minutes before moving onto the next step.

File and Buff
Using a pumice stone or foot file will help keep callouses at bay. You shouldn’t ever use sharp objects to remove a callous nor should you file for too long or too hard. Short sessions are best as improper or aggressive filing can cause injury or put you at risk for an infection.

Cut Your Nails Properly
Cutting your nails straight across can help to prevent ingrown toenails. Rounded nails also give fungus a place to invade. If you happen to have an ingrown toenail –you should never try to treat it yourself, instead seek out a podiatrist for proper treatment.

Prepare
Dry your nail bed completely, removing any lotion or oil residues that will cause the polish to peel off. Give your nails a quick wipe down, and then separate your toes with separators or cotton balls for the grand finale.

Polish
The moment you have been waiting for: polish. Choose the color of your choice and apply the polish to your freshly made up toes. Then have fun admiring your new look!

With summer on the horizon, many of us are dreaming of sandals and perfectly pedicured toes.
